The 2020 Moore County Women's Amateur was cancelled due to the continuing expansion of the Corona Virus in North Carolina.
We we sorry not to have the opportunity to experience the course and warm hospitality at 7 Lakes Golf Club.
Yang Claims Moore County Women's Am Title
The Moore Country Women’s Amateur returned to The Country Club of North Carolina as a success on every level. There was a capacity field featuring the largest championship division since the tournament was retooled in 2013.
Soo Kee Yang from the Colonial Country Club posted a two-day total of 157, winning by three strokes over Alexis Jarrel, who is currently on the UNCW women’s golf team, and Jessica Kitttelberger, a CCNC resident and recent graduate from Dartmouth College.
Sherry Bowman from Mid South led the Friendship Division (shorter tees) with a stellar 77-76—153.
The field had competitors from 24 different clubs with the largest contingents from Pinehurst Country Club and Pinewild. As always, the true winner of this tournament is Friend to Friend, the Carthage-based women’s shelter serving thousands of women fleeing from abuse.
With the generous donation from the sponsors, especially the title sponsor Leith Aberdeen, plus the raffle donations, $6,680 was raised. Additionally, each entry fee includes a $10 donation. Many of the players upped the ante resulting in $2,570. The total donation to Friend to Friend this year is $9,250 — a new record for this event.
Since 2013, the Moore County Women’s Amateur has raised close to $45,000 in cash. Over the years, the players have also donated “shoe boxes” filled with the necessary and caring items a new arrival at the shelter needs. The MCWA continues to be the event that features “Women Helping Women.”
Great thanks go to the host club, The Country Club of North Carolina for its quality service, excellent merchandise, delicious lunch and magnificent golf course. The Dogwood is rated in the top 10 in the state for a good reason.
The “luck of the golfer” was certainly in play in Tuesday. After the awards luncheon and all the photos were taken, the skies opened up. Perfect timing.
